Severe thunderstorms possible Thursday afternoon

Posted:
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Severe thunderstorms are possible Thursday afternoon in Nashville and the Mid-South as a slow-moving cold front approaches from the north.

Middle Tennessee and southern Kentucky are included in the Storm Prediction Center’s slight risk area. Hail and damaging wind gusts are the primary threats. Tornadoes and widespread flooding are not expected.

Storms are expected to develop after 2 p.m. The storms will be isolated, but due to large amounts of atmospheric instability, severe thunderstorm warnings may be issued.

The storms are expected to weaken after dark, around 8 p.m., although an isolated thunderstorm remains possible Thursday night as the cold front lingers across the area.

The chance of a storm in Nashville is 30%.

The chance of a storm is a little higher, around 40%, across southern Kentucky and the northeast corner of Middle Tennessee.

The southwest corner of the Mid-State has the lowest chance, around 20%, of storms Thursday.
