MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Five people were injured, two seriously, in a crash Wednesday morning on Northwest Broad Street in Murfreesboro.

The wreck closed the roadway for a time and tied up traffic in the area for hours.

The accident happened just after 6:30 a.m. in the 2200 block of Northwest Broad Street not far from the Harley-Davidson store.

Jeffrey Barrett, 34, of Murfreesboro, was traveling north when he lost control of his blue Dodge Caravan and collided with a silver Oldsmobile Alero.

Barrett’s van continued on across the median and into the southbound lanes when it collided with a black Honda Odyssey carrying a family of four from east Tennessee.

Barrett and Chester Carpenter, a 61-year-old passenger in the Honda van, suffered serious injuries and were flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville where they were listed in critical condition Wednesday night.

The Honda’s driver, Martha Carpenter, 57, and two other passengers, 18-year-olds Zachary and William Carpenter, were transported to Vanderbilt by ambulance with minor injuries.

Martha Carpenter was listed in stable condition Wednesday night.  The teens had been treated and released.

The driver of the Oldsmobile was not injured.

Both southbound lanes heading toward Murfreesboro were closed for more than three hours.  Traffic was diverted to one of the two northbound lanes.

Southbound traffic was backed approximately 12 miles up all the way to State Route 840 while crews cleared the scene.

The road reopened around 10:15 a.m.
