NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Interstate 65 was shut down for hours Friday morning due to a crash involving a semi just north of downtown Nashville.

The crash happened around 3 a.m. near mile marker 86, under the Fern Avenue overpass and not far from the Interstate 24 interchange.

All four lanes of traffic were reopened over five hours later, just before 8:20 a.m.

While the circumstances surrounding the crash remain unclear, the semi was left blocking lanes of the roadway after smashing into the stone wall on the side of the interstate.

Officials told News 2 fuel was leaking from the tractor trailer after the accident.

Drivers on I-24 west were also affected by the crash, with traffic becoming backed up for a few miles when officials diverted motorists to Spring Street in order to avoid the incident.
