Artist painting official portrait of Pope Frances lives in Brentwood

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. - Igor Babailov, the world-renowned artist chosen to paint the official portrait of Pope Francis, lives in Brentwood.

Born and trained in Russia, Babailov has painted popes, presidents, and people from all walks of life.

He moved to Middle Tennessee 10 years ago after he decided he liked the area having visiting several times.

Babailov has already done portraits of two popes, Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, and he just returned from the Vatican to prepare for to paint Pope Francis.

“Meeting him and to receive his blessing was… a blessing, it was incredible,” Babailov told News 2.

He said painting begins with a sketch.

“By drawing, you are learning, you are studying every detail of the facial features and you can see the movements, you know you can see if the person thinks of something sad or something happy, you know it all shows in the face, trying to capture the individuality of each person, it's not just, get the likeness,” Babailov said.
