MT. PLEASANT, Tenn. - A Mt. Pleasant man followed the fate of his father when he was killed over the weekend after being ejected from his pickup truck on the same stretch of road where his dad died 10 years earlier.

Stephen "Tubby" Powell, 35, was traveling on Highway 43 in Maury County around 11:30 p.m. Saturday when lost control of his truck, traveled through the median and flipped two times, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

Powell was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later on Mother's Day.

On November 15, 2003, Powell's father Leroy, then 50, was killed a couple of miles away on the same road after also flipping his pickup truck and being thrown from the vehicle.

The two men suffered the exact same injuries, according to family members.

"The same circumstances, the same way he wrecked, the injuries, it's just ironic," said Powell's aunt, Vickie Cox.

Powell had spent the day Saturday with relatives celebrating his mother's birthday.

"He went around the room and told all of his aunts he loved us before he left," said Cox.

The family is clinging to those memories and the seven-year-old son Powell leaves behind.

"He loved him more than anything," said Cox.

Those who knew Powell said he touched many lives in the community.

He enjoyed playing golf, baseball and coaching his son's baseball team.

Friends said he had a big personality and a big heart to go with it.

"He was just wonderful to be around. Everybody liked him and he liked everybody," Cox told News 2.

According to the THP report, Powell was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

Funeral services have been planned for Wednesday.
