PUEBLO, Colo. -

Two dogs were saved from a house fire by Colorado firefighters Wednesday after falling unconscious.

ABC News says the dogs had to be resuscitated with special face masks made for animals.

"They're just a little deeper [than human masks] so you can fit them over the snout," said Eric Knight, fire inspector of the Pueblo Fire Department.

Knight added they were donated to the department several years ago, and they’ve come in handy.

The masks, which are plastic and cone-shaped, come in three sizes to fit various animals.

They are becoming increasingly common at fire departments across the country as animal advocate groups donate them more and more.

"So it's a pretty broad spectrum of animals they can rescue if they have to," said Renee Wolfe of the Southern Colorado Kennel Club.

She added, "It's the same kind of setup you would use for a human to provide emergency oxygen."

The dogs rescued on Wednesday are currently recovering at a veterinarian’s office, the fire department told ABC.

No one was injured in the fire. It destroyed the kitchen and left the rest of the home smoke-damaged, displacing the family of five that lived there.
