LEBANON, Tenn. -

A 77-year-old Wilson County man is now charged in a shooting Wednesday night that killed his grandson and injured his grandson’s girlfriend.

The shooting occurred following an altercation at the home the three shared on Chicken Road off Tater Peeler Road about 10 miles south of Lebanon.

James Francis Hoover’s grandson, 31-year-old James Chase Hoover, died at the scene.

His girlfriend, Crystal Colyer, was also shot but managed to run a neighbor’s home for help.

Colyer, 31, was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville with a single gunshot wound to her lower body. She is expected to recover.

The elder Hoover was injured in the altercation but was not shot. Wilson County Sheriff Robert Bryan said he suffered a hatchet wound to the head.

He was released from the hospital Thursday afternoon and booked into the Wilson County jail on charges of criminal homicide and attempted criminal homicide.

Sheriff Bryan said "drugs and alcohol were found in residence and likely contributed to cause of altercation.”

The investigation is ongoing.
