NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Skydivers near John C. Tune Airport were mistaken for a plane crash Monday night, which in turn cost taxpayers money.

It happened just after 8 p.m. at the airport located in west Nashville, north of Charlotte Pike and just south of the Cumberland River.

News 2 learned the skydivers, who had pyro technical gerbs attached to their legs, were hired by an area church to perform as part of a child abuse awareness event being held at the church.

When the six skydivers reached 12,000 feet, they ignited the pyros, which were mistaken for a fiery crash.

As a result of the mistake, 14 units with the Nashville Fire Department were dispatched to the airport, which according to Assistant Fire Chief Charles Shannon, is standard procedure for an airplane fire call.

Authorities said the skydivers had permission to do the performance and were given approval by the FAA.

“We would have liked to receive some sort of notification, but it’s not required,” said Shannon.

Shannon said the incident cost taxpayers some money, though an exact amount is not known.

“It turned out yes, it cost us a little money, but we respond all the time to situations where we don’t do anything. We get there and it’s already out or the person didn’t want to go to the hospital,” he explained.

No injuries were reported in Monday night’s incident.

The group of skydivers is set to perform in Charlotte in the near future.
