FAIRFIELD, Calif. -

A pilot was killed when a vintage biplane crashed during an air show in northern California.

The crash happened at the Travis Air Force Base in Solano County on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. Thousands of people watched as the 1944 Stearman biplane flipped over in an open field and caught on fire.

Witnesses said two Air Force personnel tried to rescue the pilot, but could not reach him. The crowd was evacuated from the base and no one on the ground was injured.

The pilot of the plane has been identified as Eddie Andreini, a well-known stunt pilot who had performed in nearly 1,000 air shows.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.
