RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - 8-year old Marty Cobb, the South Richmond boy who was killed while protecting his sister last week, will be laid to rest Friday.

The funeral takes place at 12 p.m. at Mims Funeral Home.  Afterwards, the public is invited to a gathering and wreath laying ceremony at Saint Paul's Baptist Church.

The southside Richmond community came together last Saturday for a prayer vigil in honor of 8-year-old Marty Cobb. The little boy was killed behind his home off of Brandon Road while trying to protect his sister from an assault. Police have arrested and charged a 16-year-old with murder and assault in connection with the case.

"When a community gets together like this, no evil can prosper."

"He was a fun-loving child. I used to see him play, he and his sister. I'm going to miss him. I used to see him go up and down the street on the big wheel," said neighbor Veronica Loney.

Everywhere were reminders of a happy child who loved playing with toy trucks and keys. Friends and family gathered around Marty's mother, Sharain Spruill, with a message.

"We're here for the family as well. Not just for today, but the days and weeks and months to come."

Supporters hope the community can grow from this tragedy.

"Whatever lessons we can learn from this, as a community, to get back to the old days where we loved and protected each other."

"My prayer for this community is that something beautiful will come from something ugly."

The neighbors vowed to focus on the little ones, to make sure nothing like this happens again.

"A spirit of defiance that says anybody that does not cherish, defend and protect our children, that you are not welcome in our community."

"Just as a person, humanity has to step in and say, 'You know what, we are not going to allow anyone else to hurt our children, we're going to protect them at all costs,'" said Pastor Theodore Hughey.

There has been a memorial set up in Marty's honor. If you'd like to donate, contact any Wells Fargo Bank and tell them you would like to donate to the "Keys for Marty Foundation."
