FAYETTEVILLE, Tenn. - The last few days have been tough for Rita Norwood and her husband but she considers her family fortunate.

A tornado touched down about a half-mile from her home in Lincoln County Monday night.

“We heard the wind and went to the door and we could see it up above us. We just got lucky it didn't touch down right where we were,” Norwood told News 2.

About 100 American Red Cross workers have put in more than 4,000 hours helping families recover from the storm.

Damage assessment crews visited more than 270 homes to determine what type of services were needed.

They've faced challenges.

“Since it's a rural community, logistically it was really a challenge getting from point A to point B to find out who was actually in need,” said Cecil Stout with the American Red Cross.

Command posts and churches are flooded with donations of food, clothing and toiletries for people in need.

Friday, the local high school served as a drop off site for people to donate school supplies for students.

“You wouldn't believe how it makes you feel to know you've got a place to go and get stuff you really need,” said Norwood.

Norwood said community support has been amazing.

Two people died and several others were injured in the EF-3 tornado that hit Lincoln County on Monday night.
