PASADENA, Calif. - A three-year-old battling cancer has helped raise thousands of dollars for cancer research by creating homemade Mother’s Day cards.

Aubrey Castro was diagnosed with leukemia last May, ABC News reported.

While undergoing treatment, Aubrey’s mother said her daughter took a great interest in creating artwork.

“Ever since she’s been going through treatment she will paint or color with crayons or markers. Even when she was at home and on steroids [she was making artwork]. She had an easel, it was for painting and coloring and that how the cards evolved,” explained mother Vanessa Castro.

Father Ivan said the family decided to sell Aubrey’s cards after they learned the federal government only appoints a small amount of funding to pediatric cancer research.

Aubrey’s cards focus on her favorite things, flowers and butterflies, and are often created in her favorite colors of pink and purple.

“She already is such an artist. She does the flower in one stroke,” Vanessa said.

The cards are sold on the St. Baldrick’s Foundation Web site and through a family friend’s shop on Etsy for a $5 donation.

So far, around 1,500 cards have been sold. The family hopes to sell 2,014 by Mother’s Day.

Aubrey has several months left on her chemotherapy treatments.
