A fisherman going for shrimp accidentally caught an 18-foot goblin shark off the Florida Keys Thursday, NOAA reports.

NOAA Fisheries Service says this is only the second goblin shark of record in the Gulf of Mexico.

Biologists are working with the shrimp fisherman to collect important information about the shark, a known deep water species that is rarely seen at the surface or in shallow waters.

Shortly after capture, the shark was released and swam away.

NOAA encourages people to call and report these rare sightings and catches as the information they can collect allows them to know more about a species.
