Dr. Gilbert Webb Monitors Blood Clots Throughout Pregnancy

ST. LOUIS, April 29, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Daniela Yordanova knew there was something wrong towards the beginning of her pregnancy when the left side of her body became weak and an asymmetric smile appeared on her face.

Immediately, she was taken to Mercy Hospital St. Louis and doctors suspected a stroke. Doctors in the emergency room identified blood clots which could have caused the stroke, along with a large blood clot in Daniela's left leg called deep venous thrombosis (DVT).

Daniela required the care of a multidisciplinary team that could address her simultaneous pregnancy and cardiovascular complications, which included Dr. Gilbert Webb of Midwest Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

Further tests with cardiologists at Mercy Hospital St. Louis concluded that in addition to the stroke, Daniela had a hole in her heart that had been there since birth, along with an inherited blood clot disorder. Both of these factors contributed to the occurrence of a stroke.

Dr. Webb and the team at Midwest Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Mercy watched Daniela closely for the remaining seven months of her pregnancy. Daniela's blood clots began to dissolve and her stroke symptoms subsided.

Daniela was admitted to the hospital near the end of her pregnancy. For delivery, she was put on blood thinners to prevent clotting, but the blood thinners had to be reversed at the delivery to prevent hemorrhaging.

Labor was induced and the blood thinning medications were stopped as delivery approached. Daniela delivered a health baby boy and had no further clots or strokes.

This successful story was accomplished by the dedicated response team of a diverse group of highly trained specialists at Mercy Hospital St. Louis and Midwest Maternal-Fetal Medicine.
