NEW YORK - A New York elementary school has cancelled its annual end of the year kindergarten show, saying the children cannot afford to take time off from getting "college and career" ready.

According to ABC News, parents were sent a letter from the principal of Harley Avenue Primary School informing them the reason behind the cancellation is simple.

The letter read, in part, "We are responsible for preparing children for college and career with valuable lifelong skills and know that we can best do that by having them become strong readers, writers, coworkers and problem solvers."

Parents have said their children do not understand why they won't be allowed to sing in their assembly that was scheduled for the middle of May.

Since the cancellation, more than 2,000 people have signed a petition against the termination of the show.

Peter Scordo, superintendent of schools, released a statement through a spokesman Monday saying that the school has "significant goals for our youngest learners."

Officials also said that the harsh weather conditions earlier this year contributed to the cancellation of the event. The school says it lost instructional time when classes were canceled and the event would take away even more learning time for the students.
