Pursuit ends with deputy stabbed, discovery of woman's body

ESTILL SPRINGS, Tenn. - A woman's body was found inside a vehicle following the pursuit of a suspected drunk driver in Franklin County overnight Saturday.

A deputy was also stabbed in the incident that took place just outside of Estill Springs, just over 80 miles south of Nashville, around 1 a.m. Sunday morning.

Authorities were led on a vehicle pursuit by 46-year-old Robert Whipple of Winchester who ultimately came to a stop on Chase Bend Road and fled his car on foot.
Sergeant Milton Binkley with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office caught up to Whipple and a struggle ensued.  Whipple allegedly stabbed the officer in the right hand and wrist.

Sgt. Binkley was treated and later released from Southern Tennessee Medical Center.

Following his arrest, authorities found the body of 46-year-old Bridgette Haley in the passenger's seat of the car Whipple was driving.  The cause of her death was not immediately known.

The situation is being treated as a homicide. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Tennessee Highway Patrol are assisting in the investigation.

Whipple was booked into the Franklin County jail on $1,000,000 bond.

He faces multiple charges including aggravated assault, resisting arrest, driving under the influence, felony eevading habitual motor vehicle offender and other drug charges.
