WILLIAMSPORT, Tenn. - Investigators say they have ruled out mechanical problems in Monday’s Hickman County school bus accident that sent two children to the hospital.

The bus, driven by 51-year-old Jamie Sandy Christmas, somehow veered off Primm Springs Road with seven students on board.

The school vehicle crashed through a fence, slammed into a culvert and came to rest on the other side of the road just short of a creek.

Tennessee Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Bill Miller told News 2, “There were not any mechanical issues on the bus, so obviously it was driver error.”

The THP has taken over the investigation of the accident.

Sgt. Miller did not speculate what may have happened to the driver, but said her medical condition, a distraction and speed are all being investigated as possible factors.

The THP spokesman told News 2 on Monday that a blood sample was taken from Christmas when she was treated and released from St. Thomas Hickman Hospital.

The THP said that local prosecutors will wait on a decision about charges until the blood sample comes back from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
