NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A Nashville couple proudly finished the Boston Marathon Monday, a race they were forced to cut short last year due to the deadly bombings.

Vicki Schmidt was just 400 yards away from the finish line and her boyfriend, Phil Kirkpatrick, was just 10 feet away when the deadly explosion occurred last April 15.

Among thousands of other runners, the pair laced up their shoes to participate in a race that has weighed on their hearts for 12 months.

“It was almost magic,” Kirkpatrick said.

Schmidt added, “I actually got to finish this time and that was absolutely fabulous.”

Both Schmidt and Kirkpatrick said the finish line of the 26.2 miles was a threshold of emotion for many.

“Running right by where I had been standing last year without mishap, crossing the finish line and seeing all those happy people, it really rocked,” Kirkpatrick said.

Kirkpatrick also said Boston police was high-fiving the runners.
