CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - A Clarksville man stole an ambulance from a local hospital and took it on a joyride ending at Burger King.

According to police, the ambulance was parked outside Gateway Medical Center with the keys in the ignition.

But when Montgomery County EMS workers walked out of the hospital to transport a patient last week, the ambulance was nowhere to be found.

It didn't take long to track down the missing emergency vehicle.

All Montgomery County EMS ambulances are equipped with tracking devices.  Within minutes, the missing ambulance was found parked at an area Burger King.

When officers arrived, it was unoccupied and still running.

The driver who took it, Michael Brown, 26, told police the ambulance belonged to him but he could not recall where he found it.

Brown, who suffers from mental illness, was confused, according to officers.

He was trying to get from the hospital back to a nearby motel where he'd been staying.

Brown was taken back to the hospital for evaluation.

It's believed he got inside at least one other ambulance before taking one because his personal items were found inside and the seat had been adjusted.

According to EMS Director, Jimmie Edwards, it is standard operating procedure to leave ambulances running to keep the patient compartment, medication and equipment at the proper temperature and to keep the equipment charged.

Brown will be charged with joyriding.
