CHERRYVILLE, N.C. - A North Carolina high school student says she was kicked out of her prom because she was wearing red skinny jeans.

According to WBTV, Shafer Rupard, a senior, said she was walking to the dance floor when a teacher approached her.

"The teacher tapped me on the shoulder and said she had a problem with what I was wearing," said Rupard. "I thought it was because of the hat or the leather jacket, and I was like, 'Well I'll take those off,' and she was like, 'No, it's the pants.'"

Rupard said it felt like a “slap in the face.” She and her mother said they have looked at the student code of conduct and could not find any information about a dress code for prom.

The mother said she spoke to the school’s principal about the issue and was told that there was nothing about the dress code in the book.

However, after emailing the principal, Rupard’s mother still hasn’t received an apology or any type of response.

"We want to put out the message to all teenagers that you should be allowed to be yourself," she said.
