CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.J. - A woman is suing the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission after her request for an "8THEIST" license plate was denied.

According to ABC News, Shannon Morgan says her First Amendment Rights were violated when the Commission said the requested text on the plate was "considered objectionable."

Before Morgan sued, she tried registering a plate that said "Baptist." Once that plate was approved, she decided to file the lawsuit.

She says that when she first contacted the state about why her request was denied they never gave her a clear answer.

The watchdog group Americans United for Separation of Church and State is assisting Morgan in filing the suit.

Americans United said in a statement to ABC that they believe the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission’s actions are “mean-spirited and derogatory” as well as “unconstitutional.”

The group also says the commission has avoided all contact with Morgan since the incident.

David Silverman, president of American Atheists, was also unable to get a license plate reading "ATHE1ST" until media reported the story.
