KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Donnie Tyndall is the new head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers men’s basketball team.

After swinging and missing with Louisiana Tech head coach Michael White early Monday, Tennessee turned quickly to the Southern Miss head coach and got a deal done.

Tyndall led Southern Miss to 56 victories over the last two seasons and two trips the NIT.  Before that, he spent six seasons at Morehead State leading his alma mater to two trips to the NCAA Tournament.

Tyndall has some roots in Middle Tennessee.  He was an assistant coach at MTSU from 2002 to 2006.

He replaces Cuonzo Martin who resigned last week to become the head coach at Cal.

UT introduced Tyndall during a news conference at the university Tuesday afternoon.
