FRANKLIN, Tenn. - Randy Tucker, the interim head of school at Battle Ground Academy in Franklin, was killed Monday morning in a car crash outside Chattanooga.

Tucker, 70, was pronounced dead at a local hospital following the 10 a.m. wreck on Interstate 75 in Bradley County, north of Cleveland.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Tucker was traveling northbound when his Porsche left the roadway, hit a guardrail and flipped several times.

Eddie Lunn, chairman of the BGA Board of Trustees, said faculty and staff were informed of Tucker’s death Monday and an assembly would be held for students Tuesday morning.

Tucker was the former headmaster at Chattanooga's Girls Preparatory School. He retired last year.

He is survived by his wife Terri, son Trey, and daughter Taylor.

“Please join the entire BGA community in keeping the Tucker family in your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time,” Lunn said in a statement.

On Tuesday, the school announced Larry McElroy will serve as the school’s interim head of school until June 30.

"Our focus will be, as always, to provide the very best educational experience for our students going forward. Randy Tucker made a significant impact on our school during his short time here. The entire BGA community will continue to keep the Tucker family in our thoughts and prayers," McElroy said.

McElroy plans to retire at the end of the school year after 41 years of service to BGA.
