GALLATIN, Tenn. - A Gallatin native has been awarded for his service during World War II 70 years ago.

The Tennessee Department of Veterans Affairs presented the awards to 93-year-old First Class Petty Officer James Horton in a special ceremony Saturday.

Horton was honored with several medals, including the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, America Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Combat Action Medal.

“It is a privilege to recognize the World War II service of James Horton,” the Tennessee Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner
Many-Bears Grinder stated. “He is an American patriot and Volunteer State hero who has waited way too long to receive the recognition
he deserved 70 years ago.”

When Horton was 23-years-old he served on the USS Denver with 300 other shipmates in 1943 and 1944. While trying to regain control of Bougainville Island from Japan, the ship was attacked and 20 crew members were killed.

After the war Horton worked to recover prisoners of war.

Horton is the only living Tennessean to serve on the USS Denver during combat in World War II. He is also one of only six surviving ship mates nationwide.
