A New Jersey mother is facing charges after she drove her van with her teens inside into a river.
Joann Smith, 49, has been charged with attempted murder and child endangerment, according to ABC News. Police said Smith was traveling with her three children, ages 13 to 15, when she drove her van into the cold Delaware River Thursday.
The three teens used their cell phones to call for help.
Jeffrey Smith, the father, said he was about 15 minutes away running errands with his oldest son when he got a frantic call from his daughter at 6:30 p.m.
"They did all the right things," explained Smith. "I just thank God that they got out safely."
One of the teens managed to kick out a window and a passerby helped the family escape.
Joann Smith is behind bars on $600,000 bond.
Her husband said she has struggled with mental illness for years.
