FRANKLIN, Tenn. -

Franklin police are investigating an attempted robbery Tuesday afternoon at the Big Lots store on South Royal Oaks Boulevard.

It happened just before 1 p.m.

Police said the suspect, a man in his 50s, walked into the store and up to a cashier.  He announced that he was robbing the store and ordered the cashier to give him money.

The cashier declined, explaining that she could not open the register without having an item to ring up.

The suspect grabbed a nearby item and again ordered the cashier to open the register.

After she declined and stepped back to call police, the suspect fled.

He left with nothing and sped out of the parking lot in a silver vehicle.

Big Lots was closed for about an hour.  The store has since reopened.

The suspect was wearing a tan hat, jeans and a jean jacket.

Anyone with information is urged to call Franklin police at 615-794-2513.
