NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Barry Trotz won't be returning as head coach of the Nashville Predators.

The team announced Monday that Trotz's coaching contract will not be extended and they will immediately begin their search for a new head coach.

The Predators said Trotz has been offered a position within the organization's hockey operations department.

Trotz, 51, is the only coach the Predators have known in their 15-year history.

General Manager David Poile thanked Trotz for "everything he has done" for the franchise.

"He has been the face and voice of our team for 15 years. He created, developed and lived The Predator Way – on the ice, in the office and in the community. There could be no finer ambassador for the Predators or Nashville than Barry Trotz," said Poile who said the decision to let Trotz go was the "most difficult decision of his 30-plus year general manager career."

The Predators haven't made the playoffs in two years but ended the season arguably as one of the NHL's hottest teams having scored 14 goals in their last two games, seven each against Chicago and Minnesota.
