GERMANY -

A message in a bottle thrown into the ocean in 1913 was recently found off the coast of Germany by a fisherman.

The message, said to be the oldest message in a bottle in the world, was nearly illegible except for the name and address of the sender, Good Morning America reports.

Richard Platz wrote the message when he was 20 years old and requested that, when found, the message be sent back to him.

It was delivered to Platz's granddaughter, 62-year-old Angela Erdmann.

"It was very surprising," she said. "A man stood in front of my door and told me he had a post from my grandfather. He then told me that a message in a bottle was found and that the name on the card was that of my grandfather."

Erdmann said she never knew Platz, who died at 54 in 1947, but had plenty of stories passed on from her mother, his daughter.

"I knew very little about my grandfather, but I found out that he was a writer who was very open minded, believed in freedom and that everyone should respect each other," she recalled.

Erdmann said he did a lot for the young and later travelled with his wife and two daughters.

"It was wonderful because I could see where my roots came from," she added.

The message, written on a postcard, will be on display in a German museum.
