Man tells woman to pay $400 or lose electricity

On a busy day in the Beverly's of Nashville Salon on Nolensville Pike a call from a man stopped the owner Beverly Chisom in her tracks.

The man told Chisom he was calling from NES and if she did not pay him $435.92 within 45 minutes he was coming to disconnect power to her salon.

"It had me really upset because we were fixing to be in trouble," she said. "I asked him for his telephone number, he gave it to me. I asked for his name, he gave it to me."

Before Chisom paid the man she called her son who is responsible for paying the bills for her salon.

She then called NES who told her the man on the phone call was not an NES employee.

"They told me all your bills are paid and this man is trying to scam you," she said. "I called the guy back once I realized what was going on and I told him he needed to leave people alone and get a job."

Chisom gave News 2 both numbers the man gave her when he asked her to pay the alleged NES build.

The first number had a local 615 area code and the second was a 1-800 number.

News 2 called both numbers. The 615 number rang to a voicemail where we left a message.

The 1-800 number picked up and placed us on hold, but no one answered the phone.

NES told News 2 the company does not track the number of calls it gets from customers complaining of a caller trying to convince the customer to pay an outstanding balance.

Company spokeswoman Laurie Parker did say in an email, "We will issue a news release/alert when we notice an increase in calls from customers or a change in the scammer's strategy."

Chisom said she is speaking out about her experience in the hopes of warning others about the phone calls.

"It upset me," she said. "It had me really nervous and they need to catch them."

In October, NES warned customers via its Web site about a similar set of calls customers complained about getting.

"NES employees always carry proper identification and never call or go door-to-door to request personal information such as bank account or credit card numbers. If you have doubts about the legitimacy of a request, contact NES Customer Relations at 615-736-6900," the online release said.
