NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A Metro police officer was seriously injured in a crash early Sunday morning while pursuing a suspect.

Around 3 a.m., a shooting occurred in the 2000 block of Murfreesboro Pike and led to a police chase through south Nashville.

Officer Nicholas Berens, 25, lost control of his vehicle on Bell Road near the intersection of Mt. View Road when a red car in front of him stopped suddenly due to his sirens.

Berens swerved to avoid the car, causing him to run off the road and strike a tree on the driver's side of his vehicle.

His car became wrapped around the tree and Berens was pinned inside.

It took paramedics nearly 20 minutes to free him.

He was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with several fractures, contusions and cuts.

Berens remains in stable condition.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing.

No information was released on whether the shooting suspect was apprehended.
