NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

The Titans have released running back Chris Johnson after six seasons with the team.

Johnson traveled to Nashville late Thursday night where he met with Titans General Manager Ruston Webster Friday morning.

Just before 11 a.m., Johnson was seen leaving Saint Thomas Sports Park with a staff member, presumably on his way to get a physical.

Less than an hour later, the Titans tweeted they'd informed Johnson he was being released.

"As an organization, we want to thank Chris for his contributions to the Titans. Chris produced many memorable moments, broke franchise records and was durable over his six year career with our team," Webster said in a statement.

The Titans tried to trade Johnson, but a contract with remaining base salaries of $8 million this year, $8 million in 2015 and $7 million in 2016 was an issue for potential trade partners just as it is for the Titans.

"We have had an open dialogue with Chris' agent, Joel Segal, over the last few weeks, and we appreciate the patience and professionalism they have shown throughout this process," Webster continued, adding, "We wish Chris the best and thank him for the six seasons he spent with us."

The Titans drafted Johnson with the 24th pick in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft.
