HILLSBOROUGH, New Jersey -

A microchip implant is credited for reuniting a missing dog with his family more than a year later.

The Cruz family received the call on Tuesday their beloved Labrador had been found safe just miles away from their home.

Wesley disappeared from the New Jersey family's backyard in November 2012 while they were cleaning their patio, ABC News reported.

"After I was done cleaning he had just disappeared," Miguel Cruz said. "I called out and called out, but nothing. I got in my car and drove the whole radius, about five miles, and we couldn't find him."

The Cruz's was reunited with Wesley at a local police station about 30 miles from their home.

"When we first saw him he was excited, but he's always happy to see everyone," Cruz said. "The next morning, at home, when we came downstairs he was just ecstatic to see us."

Cruz said Wesley gained about 20 pounds in his time away from the family and that he suffered minor injuries to his rear legs and tail.

"He's happy to be home because he's back to how he was before he was lost," Cruz said.

It still remains unknown where the canine spent the last 17 months.
