COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -

A Cookeville man is facing charges for allegedly shoplifting before a court appearance for a different charge.

According to the Herald Citizen, Billy Ray Cooper stole $620 worth of merchandise from Walmart before going to General Sessions Court Wednesday morning.

A Walmart loss prevention employee contacted police after the theft. An officer was waiting for Cooper when he returned to his van, which was parked behind the Putnam County Justice Center.

When Cooper saw the officer, he reportedly took off running.

He was later found in the bathroom inside the Bank of Putnam County on South Jefferson Avenue.

Police said Cooper stole several items including an 18V drill, tire inflator, socket set and 3T floor jack.

He was charged with theft of property involving merchandise and evading arrest.

Cooper was held on $7,000 bond at the Putnam County Jail.
