Cheatham County Schools says it has been notified by the Tennessee Department of Health of a case of tuberculosis at Sycamore High School in Pleasant View.

The health department confirmed the case on March 27, stating the potential exposure occurred earlier in the school year.

Free screenings will be offered at the school to students who have been identified as having close contact with the infected person.

"We are fully cooperating with the Department of Health while this investigation is underway," Shelley Mayo, supervisor of coordinated school health in Cheatham County Schools, said in a statement.

She added, "The health and safety of our students remain our No. 1 priority within the school district."

Tuberculosis is spread through the air from one person to another, according to the Centers for Disease Control, and can be fatal if not treated.

Symptoms include a bad cough that lasts three weeks or longer, pain in the chest, coughing up blood and weakness or fatigue.
