NEWPORT (WATE) - A Cocke County man was arrested Saturday for his 12th DUI offense.
Steven C. Edwards, 55, is charged with DUI 12th offense, driving on revoked 7th offense, violation of the implied consent law, and being a habitual motor vehicle offender.
The Newport Police Department says they were sent to the 900 block of Cosby Highway Saturday night around 9 p.m. for a black truck driving on the wrong side of the road in front of Heritage Boulevard.
While en route, dispatchers notified officers they had received another call stating the black truck had run into the median in front of Weigel's and was stuck.
Officers found the truck in the median, and found the driver, identified as Edwards, with slurred speech, bloodshot eyes and was unsteady on his feet.
Officers attempted to perform a field sobriety test, but Edwards told them he was too drunk.
He was then placed under arrest for suspicion of DUI. He also refused a blood alcohol test, saying, "no need in doing that, cause I'm drunk."
Officers then discovered Edwards was driving on a revoked license from a DUI incident on October 24, 2012.
He also had 10 other prior DUI arrests on December 23, 1983; August 12, 1989; July 31, 1993; July 2, 1994; November 14, 1996; April 7, 2001; February 14, 2002; December 28, 2003 and March 2, 2008.
He also had six prior driving on a revoked license convictions and three prior convictions for being a habitual motor vehicle offender.
