KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -

Friends of an east Tennessee running back who died this week are working to keep his memory alive.

Will McKamey, 19, passed away Tuesday after he collapsed during spring football practice at the U.S. Naval Academy.

"It's been pretty rough. This is really the first loss this close to me that I've ever had," said McKamey's friend Tre Stewart.

McKamey and his group of his friends had spent time together since their sophomore year of high school.

Friday night was the group's first guy's night without McKamey.

"These guys should be playing ball. They should be cutting up, and they should be finding girlfriends," explained Todd Stewart, a family friend. "To think that they're going to be at a funeral of their dear friend, it just something that alters their life."

McKamey was named Tennessee's Mr. Football his senior year and was selected to the All-State Team.

His funeral will be held Monday.
