Metro police have arrested a homeless man accused of killing another homeless man and putting the body in a fire pit.

According to a press release, 52-year-old Jessie Scales admitted to the crime.

He reportedly walked into the Mapco on Franklin Pike at 6:30 a.m. Saturday morning and told the clerk he had just killed someone.

The victim has been tentatively identified as a 57-year-old homeless man.

Police said Scales hit the victim several times with a shovel so he could take his money.

He then put the body in a fire pit at a homeless camp under the I-65 overpass of the CSX railroad tracks near Thompson Lane.

Scales has been charged with criminal homicide.
