Agents to crackdown on businesses selling alcohol to minors

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Tennessee is in the top five states when it comes to selling alcohol to minors.

Because of that ranking, the Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission is going to flood restaurants, bars and store to make sure they are in compliance with the law.

Over the last eight months, the ABC agents have visited more than 200 stores that sell alcohol across Middle Tennessee. Out of those businesses, 34% sold alcohol to minors.

In an effort to lower the number of alcohol sales to minors, the agency is tripling their manpower so they can conduct more unannounced compliance checks.

"We are going to drive those numbers down," Special Agent Matt Larkins said.

Beginning in April, agents will be conducting a higher number of compliance checks and are warning businesses to obey the law or pay the price.

The compliance checks will target restaurants, bars, hotels, liquor stores and wholesalers.
