NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

The latest Hollywood epic chronicling one of the Bible's most well-known characters is stirring quite the controversy.

Director Darren Aronofsky has reportedly referred to "Noah" as "the least biblical film ever made," according to The Washington Times.

Aronofsky also said that his leading character, Noah, was the "first environmentalist," as opposed to a follower of God.

An early reviewer also reported the film does not mention the name "God" even once.

Christian groups have raised enough concern surrounding the issue that Paramount, which is putting out the film, issued a statement.

It reads, in part, "The film is inspired by the story of Noah. While artistic license has been taken, we believe that this film is true to the essence, values, and integrity of a story that is a cornerstone of faith for millions of people worldwide."

It goes on to remind readers that the story of biblical story of Noah can be found in the book of Genesis.

According to The Washington Times, Aronofsky says his cinematic version of the story is more of a "dark parable about sin, justice and mercy."  Noah reportedly serves as a judge and jury of who gets on the boats and who dies.
