DYERSBURG, Tenn. -

A Dyersburg police lieutenant was arrested for DUI last weekend and has been placed on administrative leave without pay.

Lt. Jimmy DeSpain, 57, was arrested in Lauderdale County Sunday morning after his pickup truck was observed weaving on U.S. Highway 51.

According to the Dyersburg State Gazette, he smelled of alcohol and was booked into the Lauderdale County jail after failing field sobriety tests.

DeSpain's administrative leave is pending the outcome of the investigation.

"Lt. DeSpain is a respected member of the Dyersburg Police Department and we regret the necessity of this action," Dyersburg Mayor John Holden told the State Gazette. "I am confident that the investigative process through the Department's Internal Affairs Division is an appropriate response and the correct action to be taken by the city at this time."

DeSpain has been with department for 20 years and was a candidate for Dyer County Sheriff in 2010.
