NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A White's Creek woman recently discovered her Facebook photo was taken and used to advertise for prostitution without her knowledge.

Dallas Miller told Nashville's News 2 she learned of the crime after a friend sent her a link to the ad on Backpage.com.

The 21-year-old said nearly a dozen of her personal pictures she had posted on Facebook as part of a benefit for abused children were used in the ads.

"It's been tough," Miller said. "I definitely feel victimized. I was pulled out of a random pool of pictures. This could happen to anyone."

Metro police are investigating the incident, but said since the crime, referred to as criminal impersonation, is done furtively through the Internet and is often associated with fake accounts and IP addresses in foreign countries, it is a difficult one to solve.

According to cyber experts with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, social media users are encouraged to check their privacy settings on a regular basis to help prevent criminal impersonation.

Miller said she has gotten Backpage.com to pull the ads off their Web site, but they can still be found online.
