KNOXVILLE (WATE) - It was a special day for three Knoxville firefighters Monday, as they were awarded Firefighter of the Quarter.
A ceremony was held Monday honoring Dean Owens, Hugh Laxton, and Senior Firefighter Greg Sauceman who are credited for helping to save fellow firefighter Captain Mark Lacey's life back on New Year's Eve, who suffered a heart attack.
The three were honored as Firefighter of the Quarter, receiving certificates from Mayor Madeline Rogero, a plaque from the fire department, along with a surprise Silver Star Medal, which is the highest award in the Knoxville Fire Department.
"It was an amazing feeling to have him pin an award on us when that night it was very very grim on whether he was going to survive or not," said Senior Firefighter Greg Sauceman.
"This is a real honor. We've been wanting to recognize them ever since this happened and they are well deserving of it," added Chief Stan Sharp.
The three firefighters awarded all say it's humbling receiving this recognition because they were simply doing their job, trying to save Captain Lacey's life.
