CARTER COUNTY, TN (WJHL) - Firefighters are battling a large brush fire in Carter County that forestry officials suspect could have been intentionally set.

As many as 40 acres are burning along Old Railroad Grade Road between Hampton and Roan Mountain.

The fire was reported around 6:15 p.m. according to James Heaton with the Tennessee Division of Forestry.

Heaton said evidence led firefighters to think the fire was the work of an arsonist.

The state forestry division is getting help from the US Forest Service as well as the  Roan Mountain and Hampton Fire Departments.

Heaton said crews lit fire lines around the perimeter of the brush fire in hopes of containing the flames.
