SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. -

A man is in custody in Bedford County for abusing his girlfriend's five-month-old baby.

The alleged abuse happened on Tuesday while the child's mother was at work.

According to Shelbyville police Det. Sgt. Brian Crews, Melissa Elwell took her son Ayden to the hospital after she returned home and noticed he was having difficulty breathing and was not responding.

The child was airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville where he remains Friday.

Police said the baby suffered head trauma and doctors also found bruising on his lower back.

Elwell's boyfriend, Kalvin Bailey Jr., was arrested Thursday and admitted to shaking the baby, police said.

He was charged with aggravated child abuse and booked into the Bedford County jail on $75,000 bond.

The investigation is ongoing.

Earlier this week, the boyfriend of a Columbia woman was arrested for abusing her eight-month-old daughter. The girl later died.
