A dog in Arcadia endured a horrifying ordeal.

Arcadia Police Marshal Matt Anderson said the dog's owner set her on fire Thursday. Whether it was intentional, and the owner was mentally stable, are two key elements police are trying to figure out.

Witnesses said the dog could not escape the torture because she was chained. A Hardee County animal rescue group got wind of what happened, and that led them to the dog, which they have named Hope.

“We are going to transfer her to Florida Veterinary Specialist to see if she needs any further treatment and then she will be transferred back to us,” Hardee Animal Rescue Team’s Leigh Sockalosky said.

Another fitting name is Leigh is part of a group of volunteers---that calls themselves "HART."

“She'll never have to go back to what she endured. We'll make sure of that,” she said.

Their mission is to help Hope recover to a point she can be adopted to a loving home, no matter the cost.

“Right now we're worried about the care of her,” Sockalosky said.

After all, it’s about Hope-- and HART.

The Arcadia police say this case is still under investigation - but so far no charges have been filed.
