MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -

An 11-year-old girl recently shaved her head to honor a young family friend who is battling cancer.

Kylie Hunter admitted to Nashville's News 2 she was nervous before she cut off her golden locks over the weekend.

"I got butterflies," she said.

Kylie said part of her courage to shave her head came from her brothers, Ethan and Noah, who also shaved their heads to support her.

"As a mom, I am amazed at what she has taught me about the true spirit of what it means to give and be selfless," mother Amanda Mears said.

After shaving her head, Kylie said she is glad to do the gesture for her family friend.

"I feel awesome right now," she said.

Kylie and her brothers also helped collect $1,500 in pledges for Bald in the Boro, a head-shaving event that raises money for the St. Baldrick's Foundation.

The St. Baldrick's Foundation is an organization that supports childhood cancer research.

So far, participants have helped raise almost $62,000.
