5 Tennessee teams invited to NCAA Women's Tournament

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Tennessee, Middle Tennessee, Vanderbilt, UT Chattanooga and UT Martin are all headed to the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament.

The Lady Vols earned the top seed in the Louisville Region after finishing 27-5 and winning the SEC Tournament title.

Tennessee faces 16th seeded Northwestern State Saturday at 3 p.m. in Knoxville.  The winner of that game faces the winner of Southern Cal and St. John's in round 2.

Middle Tennessee earned a No. 8 seed after claiming the Conference USA regular season and tournament titles in its first year in the league.

The Blue Raiders are in the Stanford Region and face ninth seeded Oregon State Sunday evening at 7 p.m. With a win, the Blue Raiders would likely face the South Carolina Lady Gamecocks who are seeded first in that region.

Vanderbilt struggled down the stretch, but the Commodores also received an eight seed in the tournament.

The Commodores meet ninth seeded Arizona State Saturday morning at 10 a.m. in Toledo.  Like MTSU, the ‘Dores would likely face a one seed in round two if they win.

Notre Dame is the top seed in that region and would likely be their round 2 opponent.

Former Vanderbilt head coach Jim Foster has UT Chattanooga dancing.  UTC went 27-3 this season, earning an 11 seed.  They will face sixth seeded Syracuse Saturday.

UT Martin is a No. 13 seed. They face North Carolina Sunday at 2 p.m. in Chapel Hill.

The women's final four will be held at Bridgestone Arena next month, April 6-11.

News 2 was at the Omni Hotel Monday night for the big announcement.  Several events are being planned around Nashville during the event.
