Police padlock businesses for 'liquid relaxation' shots

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Metro police shut down three Nashville businesses Monday afternoon for selling liquid "relaxation shots" containing a chemical banned by the state.

The businesses, Market Discount Tobacco and Beer located at 862 Robinson Road, Madison Discount Tobacco and Beer at 1442 Gallatin Pike North and Litton's Corner Market at 2830 Gallatin Pike, were also declared public nuisances.

According to a Metro police news release, the stores were selling Viva Zen, Mr. Smiley Kratom Relaxation Shot and Mr. Smiley Euphoria Party Shot for about $10 a bottle.

The products contain Mitragynine, a psychoactive agent that mirrors the effects of opiates such as sedation and pain reduction to intense euphoria.

Mitragynine, which can also cause hallucinations and delusions, was outlawed in Tennessee in 2013.

While officers were seizing bottles from the three stores Monday afternoon, they learned additional illegal product could be found at two wholesale warehouses.

They then raided Fab Wholesale on Fernco Drive and Rum Wholesale on Dickerson Pike.

Nearly 4,000 additional bottles of the relaxation shots were taken from the warehouses.

The three businesses that were padlocked Monday will remain closed until March 24, when the owners are scheduled to appear before a judge.
