Annual Breakfast for Babies benefits March of Dimes

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Hungry customers gave up plenty of green at a popular Midtown deli to help babies on St. Patrick's Day Monday.

"Breakfast for Babies" has become an annual tradition in Nashville, and breakfast never looked so green.

"Green eggs and ham is our specialty. We also have green oatmeal, green bagels, green pancakes," said Jay Young, manager of host restaurant Noshville Authentic New York Delicatessen on Broadway.

For the last 10 years, Noshville and local radio station WJXA Mix 92.9 have partnered on St. Patrick's Day for a festive breakfast and a live broadcast to raise money for March of Dimes.

The March of Dimes is the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health.

"We exist to try to prevent premature births, birth defects, and infant mortality," said Phil Toothman, State Director of Marketing for March of Dimes. "We believe that every baby should have a healthy start in life, and what's more important than that?"

Monday's short orders will go a long way in helping families. Half the proceeds from sales at the Midtown and Green Hills Noshville locations fund research and community programs.

The goal is to get every mother-to-be to 39 weeks gestation (full-term birth) and to support those who deliver early (pre-term birth).

"I had a micro-preemie who was 1-pound 8-ounces. His name is Parker. He was born at St. Thomas Midtown," said Crystal Daniel. "That was my first taste of March of Dimes, when I was in the NICU with him."

Crystal's son, Parker, is now five years old. While he still struggles with health issues, Crystal believes he continues to grow and thrive because of the work of March of Dimes.

She and her family are the organization's ambassador family for 2014. Her story reflects everything the organization is working toward.

"We miscarried and we had a stillborn before Parker. That's why March of Dimes is so important. No mom should have to leave the hospital with empty arms."

She continued, "I want everybody to know they need to donate, donate, because those dollars are just precious. They help people go home with healthy babies."

"Breakfast for Babies" is the precursor to the March of Dimes largest fundraiser, March for Babies. The annual walk draws upwards of 10,000 people from Nashville and surrounding areas.

This year's family-friendly event will be held at LP Field on Sunday, April 13. Activities begin at 12:30 p.m. The walk starts at 2:00 p.m.

March of Dimes has chapters nationwide. For more information on the work of the organization or events near you, visit the March of Dimes website.
