Investigators are still trying to identify a woman whose remains were discovered near Interstate 65 in Maury County in the mid-1970s.
Detective Jerry Williams said the remains were found near Highway 99 and Joe Brown Road by two hunters in February of 1975.
"We have reason to believe that she didn't die naturally," Det. Williams added.
The woman was found above ground, partially clothed.
While Det. Williams wouldn't elaborate on how the woman was murdered, he said he believes she was killed in the fall of 1974.
A photo from the case shows one of the hunters holding her pants, which had a small flower design.
Detectives knew her ethnicity, height and approximate age, but couldn't find any missing persons reports that matched her description, including reports with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
"It's sad to know you could just go missing and nobody reports you," Det. Williams said.
Her dental records and DNA were entered into the nationwide database with no match.
In 2012, Maury County Regional donated a CT scan of her skull to help come up with a 3D photo of her, which was released to the media.
The victim was African American, between the ages of 15 and 25. They believe she was approximately five feet, four inches tall.
"The thing is, she was found close to the interstate so she may not be local. Could be Nashville, could be anywhere," Det. Williams explained.
Det. Williams said after they released the photo of her in 2012, another law enforcement agency got a call from someone saying she resembled a childhood friend, but the contact number given to Maury County was no good.
He said they're hoping that person comes forward again.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Det. Williams at 931-375-8693 or 931-626-8907. Tips can also be emailed to JWilliams@maurycounty-tn.gov.
